Archeologists Make Stunning Discovery That Could Prove The Bible Was True

A groundbreaking archaeological study has revealed that a section of wall in ancient Jerusalem, previously believed to have been built by Hezekiah, King of Judah, was in fact constructed by his great-grandfather, Uzziah. This discovery overturns longstanding expert opinion and aligns with the Biblical narrative.

Previous Understanding
The wall is located in the City of David, the historic archaeological site considered to be the original heart of Jerusalem according to the Bible. Earlier scholars attributed the wall to Hezekiah, who ruled during the 7th and 8th centuries BC. Hezekiah was thought to have constructed the fortification to defend against the Assyrian Empire after witnessing the fall of the northern Kingdom of Israel.

New Findings
However, a nearly decade-long study conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), Tel Aviv University, and the Weizmann Institute of Science now credits the construction to King Uzziah, following a major earthquake. This finding supports the Biblical account that Uzziah, Hezekiah’s great-grandfather, built the wall.

Dr. Joe Uziel of the IAA explained: “For decades, it was assumed that this wall was built by Hezekiah, King of Judah. But it is now becoming clear that it dates back to the days of King Uzziah, as hinted at in the Bible.”

Biblical References
The Second Book of Chronicles describes Uzziah’s construction efforts: “Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate, at the Valley Gate, and at the angle of the wall, and he fortified them.” Additionally, the Old Testament book of Amos refers to an earthquake that occurred “two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah.”

Scientific Methodology
The research team used advanced carbon-14 dating techniques to establish the timeline of the wall’s construction. This method measures the decay of carbon-14 in organic materials like grape seeds, date pits, and bat skeletons found at excavation sites to determine their age. Despite previous challenges in dating this historical period due to fluctuating carbon-14 levels, the team achieved a remarkable accuracy of less than ten years.

Elisabetta Boaretto of the Weizmann Institute noted: “The resolution of carbon-14 was very bad – 200-300 years; it was impossible to distinguish anything else. With the work we’ve done in the City of David, we succeeded to reach a resolution of less than 10 years, which is really something very, very new and dramatic.”

Implications of the Discovery
The findings have broader implications for the historical understanding of Jerusalem. Dr. Yuval Gadot of Tel Aviv University explained that the study also revealed that Jerusalem’s western expansion occurred earlier than previously thought, during the reign of King Jehoash, five generations before Hezekiah.

He added: “The new findings strengthen the view that Jerusalem grew in size and spread towards Mount Zion already in the ninth century BC. This was during the reign of King Jehoash – a hundred years before the Assyrian exile.”

Conclusion
The study not only corrects the timeline of the wall’s construction but also aligns with the Biblical account of Uzziah’s reign. Furthermore, it shows that Jerusalem was larger and more developed during the reigns of David and Solomon than previously understood. As Dr. Uziel concluded, “We can pinpoint specific buildings and relate them to specific kings mentioned in the Biblical text.”

This research represents a significant achievement in linking Biblical accounts with scientific evidence, offering new insights into the ancient history of Jerusalem.
